Homemade hazelnut milk- the healthy alternative to shop bought
Like many of you I too have been listening to the radio and watching the TV adverts on making the big switch to plant/nut based products instead of dairy, but is this really benefiting us?
Follow the trend
I am not one for following trends or making lifestyle choices because the media tells me too, I do it because a) it tastes better or b) I want to make a change in my diet, so all this malarky about switching to plant-based products because the milk industry is just so bad, in my opinion, is rubbish. Having grown up around a lot of farmers and I can say they put their heart and soul into their products, ensuring both animal and product are well cared for, so I can’t see why I would give up something I have grown up drinking/eating just because the media says so.
Last week at the Good Food Show, Feast, I learnt some shocking facts about the shop bought nut milk which really annoyed me.
“it turns out that a 1-litre carton of almond milk contains less than a handful of almonds.
To be precise: one analysis of UK almond milk brand Alpro revealed that almonds only make up 2% of the total drink – source dailyhealthpost
I do, however, really enjoying eating and drink nut-based products, purely because they taste nice. I recently stumbled upon a great recipe to make your own hazelnut milk at home.
- 1 Cup of hazelnuts- soaked in water overnight
- 1/2 vanilla bean
- 5 dates- soaked in hot water for 5 minutes and pitted
- Blend the hazelnuts and dates together
- Add 1/2 vanilla bean and 2 cups of water
- Let stand for 15 minutes and strain
(To make chocolate milk, add cocoa powder at the blending stage)
and voila! you have hazelnut milk… easy!
